The most in-demand jobs in Latvia

When thinking about their children's future, parents should not only consider their children's interests and ambitions. It is a good idea to choose a better educational institution to help them find their chosen career. They also need to understand if there are opportunities to study on a budget. They may need to borrow to access student loans with a government guarantee. Consider an education loan.

The Latvian Confederation of Employers (LCE), in cooperation with the career portal Prakse.lv, created a list of the most sought-after professions in our country today in 2018, taking into account the opinions of more than 2,500 employers, a list of the most important industries in Latvia at any given time was created. It includes professionals with many vacancies, specialists and engineers of various levels.

Programmers.
The titles relate to the information and communication technology (ICT) sector and related jobs. Here it is necessary to focus on the profession of programmers, which, according to employers, was the most sought-after and necessary profession in Latvia in 2018; it is worth adding that ICT is a diversified industry employing project managers, auditors, systems analysts and business analysts; in 2020 the situation will be slightly different.

Programming is becoming more accessible with the introduction of new languages that simplify learning. priorities in ICT professional development are analytics and digital marketing (also for industrial companies). Web designers and testers are needed on the job.

Salaries for these professions can reach 1,000 euros per month, with particularly talented individuals receiving higher multiples.

Another category in the ICT sector is the list of workers performing technical tasks: installing and setting up fibre optics, setting up VPN connections for large companies and enterprises. Here, the average salary remains quite high.

Marketing and finance professionals, accountants and project managers.
This list also includes jobs related to supporting the company's activities.

The range is very broad and includes marketing and finance professionals, accountants and project managers. These professions retain their status in real life (offline).

However, as more and more companies move online, there is an increasing demand for services in areas such as website promotion, online reputation building and management. An online version of the company, if you will.

The cost of these services runs into the tens of thousands of euros, so we can expect the experts to be paid at reasonable rates. Privacy policies are important for many large companies, so not only those who know the rules of search engines can work for them.

Concrete workers, cooks, carpenters, shopkeepers, builders, installers, maintenance workers, construction workers
Every year, the State Employment Agency (SEA) compiles a list of the jobs with the highest demand, including the vacancies that require the most workers: in 2018, truck drivers topped the list, followed by concrete workers, cooks, carpenters, carpenters, shopkeepers, builders, installers, maintenance workers, builders and, finally, developers are also on the list. These are the jobs that are available.

Let's take a look at the properties. The country is being rebuilt, reconstructed and restored. Therefore, specialists with various qualifications are needed. Despite news that unemployment is predicted to rise, foreigners from near and far are being called upon to help. Meanwhile, the people of Latvia themselves do not have enough jobs with adequate salary levels and access to social packages. As a result, some of those who do not want to retrain are leaving their homes and seeking prospects abroad, where they are promised regular payments in euros. Given the volatility of the labour market, it is worth knowing that jobs that were previously relevant and sought after may no longer be in demand or may disappear altogether.

Engineers.
Engineers combine different kinds of knowledge - physics, chemistry and mathematics - and help solve various technical problems.Job classifications show that more and more people in Latvia are choosing to study engineering directly at RTU.

Since representatives of this profession are responsible for the work of architects, they have been and will continue to be in demand as well. Their main task is to design buildings, bridges and roads.

Seller.
Each job board shows professionals who are essentially involved in attracting and distributing customers and selling products and services. One of these occupations is the salesperson.

Salesperson occupations have been and will continue to be in demand in the labor market as they are related to selling and buying products and services and there is no shortage of customers, meaning that each of us is a customer in some industry.

Nurses.
Given the shortage of wages and the need for skills, nurses are also in demand.

The myriad of studies and qualifications that allow nurses to examine patients, conduct tests, analyse test results, prescribe medicines, administer treatments and educate patients, and because it is very expensive to become a doctor or medical professional in Latvia, fewer young people are studying this.

Compared to other countries, there is a very noticeable shortage of professional nurses in Latvia. Why? Because apart from the role of a doctor, nurses need other qualifications.

Teachers.
The teaching profession is still in demand in Latvia, with the number of teachers changing qualifications, retiring and looking for work abroad increasing.

Many young people choose to study in this field, but not necessarily to work in it, so there are many vacancies for teachers.

The more vacancies there are, the greater the demand for this profession in the labour market.

Drivers.
Each year, the National Employment Agency (SEA) also compiles the occupations with the highest demand, which incorporate the most in-demand job openings for workers; in 2018, truck drivers took the top spot in this ranking.

As the field of food delivery and passenger transportation expands, occupations such as taxi drivers and courier services are becoming increasingly popular.

These are the only jobs that do not require professional qualifications, with the only prerequisite being a driving licence in a particular category.

Cook
Along with the growth and development of the catering industry, the profession of cook is becoming increasingly important.

In the secondary vocational education sector, cooks are the most frequently sought-after candidates, but there is a serious shortage of cooks in Latvia.

Qualifications in this sector are relatively cheap and easy to obtain, while employment as a cook is not necessarily well paid.

However, it should be noted that this profession is stable and is often the deciding factor when looking for a job.

Vehicle mechanic
With the growth of industry and import and export, mechanics are employed by various companies to monitor the production process and take care of the technical operation of equipment.

The engineering profession is one of the most commonly chosen professions in the secondary vocational education sector, but statistics show that more than half of vocational school graduates choose another profession.

It should be noted that the engineering profession is well paid but physically demanding.

Prospects for different professions

There is another list of professions compiled by the LMT Smart Future organisers from the views of the participants. Unlike the previous list, this list foresees occupations that may disappear in the future. Based on statistics, this list includes couriers, taxi drivers and postmen, who may be replaced in the future by technological solutions such as drones and robots.

These professions do not require specialised training. Obviously, further training is provided depending on communication skills. In addition, travel agencies need to think about the requirements of the profession. After all, people today can practically find everything themselves on the internet. Only cheap transport tickets or hotel prices in euros will save their business.

However, the pandemic has left its own mark on the industry. Once the economy recovers, civilised leisure will return to our lives.

Lessons.
There is constant news in various sectors, such as education, about the courses offered by trainers. In order to access online courses, the requirements of the various exchanges must be met.

Some courses are currently offered in euros, but it is not clear if this works out well.

Automation.

In the future, automation will affect accountants and data loggers. The economy is changing dramatically and workers need to anticipate the need for self-education. The installation and programming of automation control systems will be handled by accountants, programmers and others who are busy.

So while the professions may remain, the demands on their representatives will change significantly.

Conclusion.
As you can see, Latvia today needs programmers, marketing, finance and construction specialists - who will be needed by employers in five, ten or even more than five years, we have no choice but to discuss.
