Denmark is a small country in northern Europe with a population of just 5.8 million. The country is drained by the waters of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea and is only bordered by Germany to the south. It is a very beautiful country with a high standard of living, a well-developed social security system and happy citizens. In terms of GDP per capita, Denmark is one of the richest countries in Europe, with a strong labour market and an efficient economy.
Legal work and life in Denmark attracts thousands of foreigners from all over the world, from the poorer regions of Africa and Asia to the fairly wealthy countries of Western Europe. It is an ideal place to live comfortably, study, work and run a business in Denmark. But of course, Denmark is also a very expensive country, with high property prices and taxes. Next, we will look at which jobs are in demand in Denmark in 2023.
The Danish labour market
Denmark has an employment rate of over 68% and an unemployment rate of around 2-4%. The Danish labour market is dynamic, with a large number of skilled people, competition for jobs is high and wages are high. Foreign professionals, especially those from post-Soviet countries, must have a profession in demand in Denmark, sufficient work experience and knowledge of English.
In order to work legally in Denmark, foreign jobseekers must meet several requirements. In particular, they must first look for a job vacancy, sign an employment contract, apply for a work permit and obtain a residence permit in Denmark. For foreigners (from outside the EU), the best option is to take advantage of special schemes such as the "positive list" or the "salary cap".
There is no official minimum wage in Denmark. However, the average is around 110 kroner (€14.5) per hour, or just over €2,000 per month. According to official figures from Statistics Denmark, the average wage in Denmark is SEK 38,854 (EUR 5,215) per month before tax. After taxes, local workers earn only about EUR 3 100.
The most popular jobs for non-EU foreigners are seasonal work on Danish farms and greenhouses harvesting berries, fruit, vegetables and cereals, and temporary work as waiters, bartenders and waitresses in hotels, bars and restaurants. The demand for jobs like these is quite limited, so there are more opportunities for skilled workers.
The most practical way to work in Denmark is through the positive list programme. Denmark has an official list of jobs that have a limited number of vacancies. If a foreigner has the required qualifications and experience, he or she can obtain a work permit for the duration of the work contract plus six months or four years if no duration is specified.
