With a population of over 17 million, the Kingdom of the Netherlands is one of the most populous countries in Europe. The Netherlands is a highly developed country with a dynamic economy, beautiful architecture and nature, modern democratic institutions and liberal laws. Not surprisingly, tens of thousands of immigrants dream of living in the Netherlands.
The Netherlands is located in the western part of Europe, drained by the North Sea and bordering Germany and Belgium. Due to its favourable geographical location, skilled workforce and effective legislation, Dutch businesses can improve their trade relations with most countries in the world. The next section identifies the jobs that will be in demand in the Netherlands (Holland) in 2023.
The labour market in the Netherlands
The Netherlands has a very strong labour market with a large number of highly educated and highly skilled workers. In Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and other major cities, competition for vacancies is very intense. In addition, there is also a 'battle' for jobs between the Dutch and representatives of many developed EU countries. The unemployment rate in the Netherlands is no more than 4 %. According to local experts, around 250 000 new jobs are created in the Netherlands every year.
To be officially employed in the Netherlands, applicants from third countries, including Russia and Ukraine, must meet the following requirements - to search for job vacancies in advance, sign a work contract, obtain a work permit, open a work visa and apply for a residence permit in the Netherlands, issue a GVVA document and be able to live and work legally in the Netherlands.
Dutch workers have one of the highest incomes in Europe: as of 1 January 2023, the Dutch minimum wage will be €1,934.40 per month (€446.40 per week and €89.28 per day), according to official local government figures. According to the Central Planning Authority, the average wage in the Netherlands is EUR 2 855 per month before tax and EUR 2 152 after all compulsory deductions. Income tax rates range between 36,93 and 49,50 %.
There are currently around 10.5 million jobs in the Dutch economy. Some surveys of Dutch employers indicate that there is a significant labour shortage. At the same time, the construction sector faces the greatest difficulties in recruiting professionals, while the public administration sector requires the fewest workers.
Importantly, the jobs in greatest demand in the Netherlands in 2023 are experienced builders and engineers.
Unskilled jobs in the Netherlands are popular among migrant workers from the post-Soviet region, including Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. They mainly involve heavy physical work in factories and farms (fields, greenhouses). Examples include strawberry, vegetable and fruit picking and flower packing.
