Greece is a country located in southern Europe. The country has many islands and is bordered by the Aegean Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and Crete. It is a very beautiful country with a pleasant climate and is a popular tourist destination. Some post-Soviet foreigners consider Greece not only as a place for leisure, but also as a promising country for business activities.
Despite the economic and financial difficulties of recent years, business migration and permanent employment in Greece have not lost their importance: in the latter case, it is very important to have a level of expertise, experience and skills that are lacking in the local labour market. The next section identifies the occupations in demand in Greece in 2023.
The labour market in Greece
In recent years, the labour market in Greece has not been at its best. Even graduates of Greece's most prestigious universities face serious difficulties in finding well-paid jobs. For example, the unemployment rate in the country is only about 12%, while among young people it is over 30%. According to this indicator, Greece is "ahead" among EU countries.
Legal employment in Greece requires an initial search for job vacancies, signing a contract, obtaining a work permit at the local employment office (handled by the employer), opening a work visa and obtaining a Greek residence permit. At the same time, in most cases, vacancies can only be filled by foreigners from third countries if there are no jobseekers among Greeks or EU citizens.
In terms of wages, Greece also lags behind many developed Western European countries. For example, the country's minimum wage officially stands at €831.83 per month, unchanged for seven years until 2019; in 2023, the average after-tax wage in Greece will be around €943. Skilled specialists earn around 1,510 euros and unskilled workers 717 euros.
According to statistics, about one fifth of the active population in Greece are immigrants. Most foreigners work in agriculture, tourism, construction sites and other unskilled jobs.
Popular jobs in Greece include waiters, bartenders, bartenders, animators, tour guides, waitresses, waitresses, cooking assistants, harvesters (citrus, grape and olive), nannies, nurses, housekeepers and porters.
